The skirt started out as a size 18 month pair of shorts from the Summer PJs pattern. Before adding elastic at the waist, I tried the shorts on AB and realized the rise would be too short if I folded it down for a casing. After thinking about it for a few days, I remembered that I had this fun red and white fold-over elastic (Babyville line from Jo-Ann's) and that if I used it at the waistband, I could retain the length of the rise. Yay!
To make the outfit more girly, I added a skirt (it's a slightly gathered rectangle with a center-back seam). It's sewn together with the shorts inside the fold-over elastic, to make one piece. It doesn't bother ME if AB looks like a boy, but I do find it annoying when strangers ask how old "he" is. The skirt will prevent that from happening, I hope! (I mean really, what am I supposed to do? Correct the stranger? Make them feel dumb? Pretend she's a boy? I'd rather keep it clear and nobody will have to be awkward.)
I hope you're enjoying your 4th! Did you sew anything special for the day? The sun finally emerged here after a week of rain!
