Sewing Project: 4th of July outfit

Happy 4th of July! Don't worry, I wrote this post ahead of time. I know you're imagining me slaving away on my laptop on a holiday, but I'm not! This will be a quick post to show off the outfit I made AB for today. Remember when I hinted at a failed attempt with the Alex & Anna Summer PJs? I pulled a Tim Gunn and made it work!

Does this fabric look familiar? That's right, I had the tiniest amount left over from my S.O.S Challenge blouse. And Girl Charlee has recently restocked this in the ponte knit! You can find it here.

The skirt started out as a size 18 month pair of shorts from the Summer PJs pattern. Before adding elastic at the waist, I tried the shorts on AB and realized the rise would be too short if I folded it down for a casing. After thinking about it for a few days, I remembered that I had this fun red and white fold-over elastic (Babyville line from Jo-Ann's) and that if I used it at the waistband, I could retain the length of the rise. Yay!

To make the outfit more girly, I added a skirt (it's a slightly gathered rectangle with a center-back seam). It's sewn together with the shorts inside the fold-over elastic, to make one piece. It doesn't bother ME if AB looks like a boy, but I do find it annoying when strangers ask how old "he" is. The skirt will prevent that from happening, I hope! (I mean really, what am I supposed to do? Correct the stranger? Make them feel dumb? Pretend she's a boy? I'd rather keep it clear and nobody will have to be awkward.)

I used my machine and embroidered two rows of wavy lines on the bottom. The skirt and shorts are both made from a rayon knit from Girl Charlee. Crazy soft and crazy hard to sew haha! I don't think rayon knits like me.

I hope you're enjoying your 4th! Did you sew anything special for the day? The sun finally emerged here after a week of rain!
