Jamie Jeans fit help

Since I've worn my first pair of Jamie Jeans nearly to death, I figured it was time to make another. My first pair is made from a super-stretchy cotton/spandex denim, and I removed a lot of width to make them fit tightly, as intended. This pair is from a more traditional stretch denim, and I need a little help with the fit.

These *feel* okay on, when standing, but looking at the photos I see a lot of wrinkles. My biggest issue is that when I bend my legs, the fabric doesn't seem to stretch much. The pants become tight and uncomfortable. I'm wondering if I should let them out a bit? Finish them as-is and let time stretch them out and break them in? I've pulled out my two fit books but I'm looking for some additional feedback. I haven't made many pants, especially tight ones, so I'll take all the help I can get!

  1. I have exactly the same problem with a pair I made. Unfortunately no solutions yet, so please share what you find out :)

    1. Hi Minn! With some help from my husband and muslin tweaking, I think I made some progress. First I needed to remove the excess length, just cuffing them didn't work. Next, I ended up needing to let them out around the calf. They were too tight there, which pushed them up towards the knee and caused wrinkling all over. I'll do another post with more details.

  2. Hi Beth-- If you've used a denim with less than the 15-20% stretch that Named recommends for Jamie Jeans, you probably will need to let them out to give yourself more wearing ease. If the fabric stretches out as it ages, you can always take them in again. You may not like the back leg wrinkles but if the fabric is stiff, you probably need the extra vertical ease for sitting down. By the way, there are stretch charts available online that are handy for gauging the stretch of your fabric before you cut into it. I hope some tinkering will get your jeans to feel as good as they look. --Martha T.

    1. Thanks Martha! I did end up letting them out around the calf, and it helped. I believe this denim is closer to 10% stretch but I need to double check with a stretch guide.
