Raglan T-shirt

This might be the first time I've made a t-shirt. That sounds ridiculous...that can't be true! I've made tank tops, and I've refashioned tees, and I've made shirts for AB...but a t-shirt for me? This might be a first. Crazy!

I'll call this a wearable muslin, because it's the first time I've made this pattern and I used a fabric I don't lurve. I have 8 million yards of this yellow tonal stripe (from Girl Charlee) that I got in a Bargain Box. I previously made a skirt with it (here). It's soft and pleasant and all, but I don't think yellow is really my color. Yellow stripes+white skin+blond hair=washout.

This is McCall's 6288, View A. I bought this pattern a zillion years ago (apparently it's out of print now) after seeing Andrea's version in January. Better late than never!

I used my serger for almost everything. Look at those pretty matched stripes!

In order to increase my laziness and avoid hemming, I added a small hem band to the bottom.

With the hem band, the length is just right. As you can probably see, this shirt is TIGHT and low-cut (the lacy white part in the photo above is a cami). I made a size 4 with no alterations besides the hem band. Next time, I'll raise the neckline and decrease the shoulder width. I think I need to face facts about my narrow shoulders and learn to deal with it.

I tried a new fancy stitch for topstitching the neckline and arm bands. I saw someone else doing this in one of my Facebook groups and I definitely like the way it looks. Very sporty. Kind of hard to do unless you're going in a straight line, but practice makes perfect. It's also decently stretchy, so it works okay with knits (test first!). It's number 15 on my machine (a Brother CS6000i) and it's some sort of joining stitch.

This is a tighter shirt than I normally wear, but I think it's about time I retire my baggy softball t-shirts anyway. With a few modifications (as mentioned above) I could have a zillion of these in my wardrobe. Plus it's a quick sew due to the raglan sleeve.

What's your favorite kind of t-shirt? Regular set-in sleeve, raglan, or kimono?

  1. I like that fancy top stitch, and your photo is excellent, easy to see the detail.
In thinking about your sleeve preference question, I realized there are no raglan sleeve shirts in my closet, though not by intention. Kwik Sew 2874 is in my pattern stash, time to pull it out.

    1. I like the V-neck option on that Kwik Sew top. This is the only pattern I have with raglan sleeves...it must not be very popular for some reason. Can't see why, it's so much easier to sew!
